A dog just died on a United Airlines flight for an absolutely horrendous reason

- Maret 13, 2018

In a devastating development, a family’s French bulldog suffocated to death after a United flight attendant instructed its owner to put the dog in the overhead compartment for the entirety of a three-hour flight.

A fellow passenger, Maggie Gremminger, posted to social media revealing the details of the event.

Per Buzzfeed News, the family was traveling from Houston to LaGuardia Airport in New York. While the woman initially had her black French bulldog in its carrier under the seat in front of her, a flight attendant insisted that it go in the overhead bin. Per witnesses, the woman was “very hesitant and reluctant” to comply.

“There was some back-and-forth before finally the flight attendant convinced her to move the carrier to the bin above,” Gremminger said. “The gentleman sitting next to me, in 24B at that time, looked at one another to confirm what we had just seen, both of us acknowledging it was clearly a dog, and feeling stunned that it was placed there.”

“They insisted that the puppy be locked up for three hours without any kind of airflow,” June Lara, another passenger, explained. “They assured the safety of the family’s pet so wearily, the mother agreed.”

The woman was reportedly “shocked and heartbroken” upon retrieving her dog, which had since passed away, after the flight.

“A stranger offered to hold her newborn while she sat on the floor there in the airplane aisle. She was holding her dog and rocking back and forth. Her daughter was also crying,” Gremminger said.

A spokesperson for United released a statement assuming responsibility for the incident and promising to launch an investigation.

“We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again,” the statement said.

This is only the latest in a string of recent PR disasters for United Airlines. Unfortunately, the beleaguered airline does not seem to be learning from its past mistakes, and each subsequent – and constant – apology rings more hollow than the last.
