It would appear that the president’s weekend rage about the recent slew of developments in the Trump-Russia investigation has yet to subside, seeing as he took to Twitter this morning in order to demand that his Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, launch an investigation into his predecessor, President Barack Obama, and his administration.
It would appear that the President is insinuating that the Russian electoral interference was aided and abetted by the previous administration, in a classic ploy right out of the Republican playbook: “accuse your enemy of what you yourself are guilty of.”
Question: If all of the Russian meddling took place during the Obama Administration, right up to January 20th, why aren’t they the subject of the investigation? Why didn’t Obama do something about the meddling? Why aren’t Dem crimes under investigation? Ask Jeff Sessions!

The phrasing of the president’s public demand makes it clear that he places the blame for failing to prosecute “Democratic crimes” on Jeff Sessions, the embattled head of the Justice Department who fell into the president’s ill-graces by recusing himself from the Trump-Russia investigation when it was discovered that he had had secret meetings with the Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak during the election.
The president’s tweet is yet another shameful attempt to distort the narrative and try to shove the spotlight off of himself and his team and on to the Democrats and President Obama, who did in fact try to do something about the Russian meddling – which is why there isn’t an investigation, as there were no crimes.
He asked a bipartisan group of Senators to support him in announcing that the Russians had interfered in our election, appealing to Mitch McConnell’s non-existent patriotism and asking him to choose his country over his party so that President Obama’s revelation wouldn’t seem like a partisan effort to tilt the election in favor of Clinton and instead be unified condemnation of an attack by a hostile foreign power.
McConnell, of course, famously refused. “Unfortunately, as is well documented, Senator McConnell was unwilling to help — only making matters worse” groused a former Obama administration official in an email to POLITICO.
When President Obama did take actions against Russia – passing a slew of new sanctions on the country and the oligarchs that control it – President Trump’s National Security Advisor hopped on the phone to quickly assure the Russians that they would “take care” of it.
Trump’s tweet is nothing but a cheap shot that simply reeks of guilt – and all the tweets in the world aren’t going to be enough to stop Special Counsel Mueller and his team of crack investigators.
