Donald Trump Jr. had another foot in mouth moment appearing on Fox News Saturday.
Discussing (what else?) the “memo” released by the House Intelligence Committee and declassified by his father after a long Twitter campaign to #releasethememo that was amplified by an army of Russian Twitter bots, the eldest son of the President bragged about getting back at the FBI that has been investigating both him and his family since it was discovered that their campaign had suspiciously close ties to Russian agents.
In a topsy-turvy interpretation of accountability, where the FBI, rather than holding the Trump family responsible for their malfeasance, is being held “accountable” for their efforts to discover the truth behind the Russian efforts to help Trump get elected, Trump’s comments on Fox News are sure to be introduced as testimony once any obstruction of justice indictments are filed against the President.
“There is a little bit of sweet revenge in it for me and certainly probably the family in a sense that if they wouldn’t have done this, this stuff would be going on. This would be going on at the highest levels of government,” Trump Jr. said, referring to the allegations in the memo. “They’d be continuing doing it to my father, trying to undermine his actions.”
An innocent man, of course, would welcome an investigation into false allegations, since it would eventually prove their innocence, but Trump Jr. called for an end to the Russia investigation in which his own actions have featured so prominently, having eagerly joined a meeting with a Russian lawyer who promised him dirt on Hillary Clinton during the campaign.
“Come to a conclusion already because you’ve been looking for two years, you’ve come up with nothing other than their own nefarious actions and their own collusions,” he said.
Actually Junior, they’ve indicted your father’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort and his colleague Rick Gates, his first National Security Advisor, General Michale Flynn, a foreign policy advisor, George Papadopoulos, and the last two have already pleaded guilty, so don’t try to tell us that there’s no “there” there.
Given the vehemence of you and your father’s attempts to stop the investigation, you’ve managed to convince most people that there is still a lot more hidden subterfuge yet to be revealed.
Interestingly, the release of the memo that you see as revenge against an over-reaching FBI and Justice Department, both headed by Republican appointees of your father, has been greeted universally by both Democrats and those Republicans not currently residing in the rectum of your father as a “nothing burger” that actually proves the point it was trying to dispute. Or, as The Washington Post put it in a headline today, “Devin Nunes tried to discredit the FBI. Instead, he proved it’s onto something.” Now that’s some sweet revenge.
